There are mainly 3 types of meteorites-
iron, stony, and stony-iron meteorites.
Iron meteorites are made of- you guessed it- iron.
They're the closest to our mental image of "meteorites", so most of the meteorites that landed a long time ago and have been just recently discovered is this.
Of course, there maybe a lot of stony meteorites rolling around everywhere,
but they don't look so different from normal rocks and no one'll look at every rock on the planet to look for meteorites.
Stony meteorites occupy the top- more than 90% of all meteorites is this.
Stony-iron meteorites, on the other hand- are very rare. There's only 1 or 2 out of every 100 meteorites- Just 1.5%.
